Rexburg's Most Wanted
So...I had a crazy experience yesterday. I worked a 12 hour shift and went to Melanie's fashion/hair show that she rocked! I called Jill earlier to ask if she could bring my wallet so I could get in. Afterwards she kept it because we were going to the same destination, my apartment. There were millions of cops on the freeway between Idaho Falls and Rexburg because they were doing a DUI check. As I sleepily drove I realized my left front headlight was not projecting its light. I passed two cops without being pulled over, so I thought I would get safely home. To my astonishment, a policeman from across the median flipped a U-turn to chase me down. I panicked. I could not afford another ticket due to my reckless driving record. Especially over something that could be fixed first thing Monday morning. I inched closer to a Rigby exit in an attempt to escape from this crazed cop. I inched closer but knew it couldn't be done. The cop was directly behind me. I gave in and pulled over, but he zoomed past me. I was puzzled by his generosity. I kept driving and figured he was after someone else. But no, he was just making sure I was his one headlight victim. He pulled behind me again once his suspicions were confirmed. This policeman was very friendly as he explained I would get off with a warning. I just felt stupid because Jill had my wallet so I couldn't prove who I was. He said it was ok, but I needed my insurance. My fingers fumbled for that red slip of paper I so desperately needed. I found three. One was dated 2008 and the others were June and December of 2009. I didn't have a current insurance. The cop had no choice but to write me a ticket. The only way I can get out of it is if I show my current insurance to the Rigby courthouse in two weeks. "But if I don't", he explained, "then there will be a warrant for my arrest." I stared at him blankly and agreed that I should follow his orders. He got my Rexburg address so he could arrest me if I didn't follow through. He sat in his truck with his flashing lights for what seemed like an eternity. I imagined myself in a cold dark jail cell two hours (what it would take for my parents to drive to Rexburg to bail me out since none of my friends have money). I imagined becoming a fugitive and avoiding court and wondered if I could survive on my own. It was an exciting day dream but it didn't last long because I realized a felon can't do everything they want in life. As the officer handed me my ticket I smiled at him and said, "Thank you for doing your job. I will definitely visit the courthouse." Although being a fugitive would be exciting for a few days I am grateful for my student lifestyle and the exciting things that happen everyday.
